Early Childhood Screening

Find out how your child is growing, developing and learning

As your child takes that step from toddler to preschooler, it’s the right time to take part in a FREE screening of their development. Early Childhood Screening is a simple check of how your child is growing, developing and learning. State law requires children to be screened between the ages of 3 to 5 years old.  Screening at age 3 1/2 is best so that any health or development concerns can be addressed right away.

We are currently done with this year's screenings and will resume screening in mid August 2021. Our fall schedule will be released online after July 19 and families can begin booking fall appointments online or call 651-351-4022 to schedule an appointment.

Any child who will go to school in the state of Minnesota must have an Early Childhood Screening record before entering kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening is not a kindergarten readiness assessment and should not be put off until right before kindergarten. However, if your child is five years old, not eligible for kindergarten, and not yet been through preschool screening, call to arrange an appointment.

Families living within the school district should receive a postcard about screening when their child turns 3. If you've not received the notice, please call us at 651-351-4022.

Scheduling Appointments

In-Person Screening
Schedule an appointment online or call 651-351-4022.

Virtual Screening
This option starts with forms being sent to the parent/guardian to complete and return electronically or by mail. After returning the required paperwork, a screener will schedule a phone or Zoom summary meeting with just the parent/guardian. Vision and hearing are not checked in virtual screening. Request forms or email

What to expect during screening:

Your child will complete developmental activities with a trained professional to see if they’re meeting important milestones specific to their age. They’ll check:

  • Vision and hearing
  • Height and weight
  • Immunizations
  • Large and small muscles
  • Thinking, language and communication skills
  • Social and emotional development

If any issues are identified, we’ll work with you to get the support you need.

Appointments typically take an hour. We offer both in-person and virtual screening options.
